The Tree-Saving Power of Paper Recycling

 Vicky Porter   2024-10-29  Comments

There's nothing quite like resting under a tree on a hot summer's day, a respite from the sun with a cool leafy breeze if you're lucky. Of course, trees provide us with so much more than just a shady spot to relax - they are a vital part of our lives; filtering out carbon dioxide and releasing the very oxygen we need to survive. This essential process is exactly why we must treat trees as a precious resource.

But are we doing that?

The numbers tell another story. Between 2001 and 2019, South Africa lost 1.42 million hectares of its tree cover. That's a 24% decrease since 2000. The reality? We can't go on like this. This rate of deforestation is unsustainable, but what can we do?

What Is Deforestation?

Deforestation is the clearing of trees and forests, primarily to make way for agriculture, logging, or development and it's been on the rise since 1960. It's a major environmental issue with severe consequences for both humans and the planet.

There is hardly ever just one cause for the loss of natural forest land however the main impacts come from clearing land for crops, logging, and building roads and infrastructure. The loss of these trees and all the vegetation that grows alongside them has devastating effects on the environment and natural ecosystems; including climate change from the increased greenhouse gases, soil erosion, flooding, and more.

Does Paper Recycling Help?

Yes! Paper recycling is something we can all do to help reduce the need to cut down more trees.

Recycling paper is a simple yet powerful way to make a positive impact on our environment. By choosing to recycle paper, you're helping to conserve trees, reduce energy consumption, and divert waste from landfills. Every piece of paper you recycle saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and helps to protect our planet's natural resources. Plus recycling companies, like The Waste Trade Company, create jobs and boost local economies, so it's a win-win for everyone and the planet.

DO’s & DON'Ts For Paper Recycling

*DO Flatten boxes and magazines: This will help to save space and make them easier to recycle.

*DO make a difference in your shopping cart: consider buying recycled paper products, such as toilet paper and paper towels.

*DO check out this comprehensive list of the types of paper and cardboard we accept for recycling.

*DON'T recycle soiled tissues and serviettes.

*DON'T forget to separate: separate from materials like plastic, cardboard, and other types of waste.

Summary

Trees are essential to our survival, providing us with oxygen, filtering carbon dioxide, and offering shade and respite. However, deforestation is a pressing issue in South Africa, with significant consequences for our environment and communities.

To combat deforestation, everyone needs to take action. Recycling paper is a simple yet impactful step we can all take to reduce the demand for new trees. By each doing our part, buying recycled products, and following proper recycling guidelines, we can contribute to a more sustainable future.

Let's work together to protect our forests and ensure a healthy planet for generations to come.
